Frequently Asked Questions About Business Insurance

What insurance guides are available for businesses in India?

Ten free guides covering group health insurance (GMC), employee benefits, group term life and personal accident, workmen’s compensation, directors and officers and professional indemnity liability, cyber liability under the DPDP Act, insurance for startups, choosing a broker, wellness and benefits trends, and corporate health insurance claims management.

What is group health insurance and how does it work for employees?

Group health insurance (Group Mediclaim, or GMC) is one master policy an employer buys covering all employees. Because it is underwritten at group level there are no individual medical tests, pre-existing diseases are usually covered from day one, and the per-person cost is lower than retail cover. The trade-off is that it ends with employment.

What insurance does a business need in India?

It depends on headcount, industry, contractual obligations and which state laws apply. Almost every employer with staff needs group health, personal accident and term life. Companies with field, warehouse or facilities staff carry statutory liability under the Employees’ Compensation Act. Those taking institutional capital are usually asked for D&O, and anyone holding meaningful customer data should look at cyber.

What is employee benefits insurance?

The cover an employer funds for its people beyond statutory obligations — group health for hospitalisation, group personal accident for accidental death or disability, and group term life for death from any cause. Increasingly it also includes OPD, mental health support and telemedicine, which employees use far more often than hospitalisation.

Why should businesses consider cyber insurance?

The Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 creates real financial exposure around consent, data security and breach notification for any organisation processing personal data — not only technology companies. Cyber cover pays for forensic investigation, data recovery, business interruption, notification costs and third-party claims.

What is workmen’s compensation insurance?

It insures the employer’s liability under the Employees’ Compensation Act, 1923 for injury or death arising out of employment. That liability is largely no-fault and exists whether or not you buy the policy, so an uninsured employer is self-insuring an uncapped risk. Office-only companies are exposed too, through drivers, security guards and facilities staff.

How does a corporate insurance claim work?

Two routes. Cashless: the employee is treated at a network hospital, the hospital pre-authorises with the TPA, and the insurer is billed directly. Reimbursement: the employee pays first and submits documents, usually within 15–30 days of discharge. Most rejections come from process gaps — incomplete documents, room-rent sub-limits, late notification — rather than policy exclusions.

Where can I find free insurance guides for businesses?

All ten ClearCover guides on this page are free to read in full online and free to download as PDFs. They are written for Indian employers and cover Indian regulation, Indian insurers and rupee cost benchmarks rather than generic global material.
